Truth is a Total Defense

The easiest part of writing is writing. The hardest part of writing is thinking.

– Steven Bochco – Truth is a Total Defense

Steven Bochco is one of the most acclaimed television writer/producers of all time. When Hill Street Blues made its TV debut, and then won the most EMMYS in television history, it changed the medium forever.

He then followed that legendary series with other game changing shows such as L.A. Law, Doogie Howser and the genre busting NYPD Blue.

To me, story is everything. If the story is right, it’s almost impossible to write a bad script. But if there’s something wrong you can’t write a good script, the story won’t let you.

Steven is a creative force and in our conversation he shares his wisdom from over fifty years in television and a recent battle with cancer.

Life often hangs by a thread. But it’s a remarkably sturdy thread, thin as it may be. The life force in all of us is unbelievably strong.

Steven however is not resting on his laurels. He believes that television is a mirror into society: “Reflecting who we are, what we are, as well as what we aspire to be.” And he revealed in our conversation that one of his most popular shows, L.A. Law, which reflected society and its justice system, will be returning with a modern version that mirrors what is going on in our country today.

And another thing that Steven reminds us is that:

Most of us, at some point in life, have the opportunity to reinvent ourselves – to allow our better, or stronger, natures to prevail. It takes courage and hard work, but it’s possible.

Have a great week, enjoy the episode and let your better natures prevail,

Barry
