Fathers and Daughters… A Very Funny Thing

Dad teaches us all an important lesson with these words: Joy takes courage.

Kelly Carlin – A Carlin Home Companion

Young-Kelly-Carlin-and-George

Growing up with a dad who is one of the most beloved comedians of all time is not always a laughing matter. However, Kelly Carlin and her father George Carlin had a very special relationship filled with love and laughter along with the issues that many of us face growing up. But when your dad is a “counter culture god” as Kelly describes her father in the book: A Carlin Home Companion, those issues can be greatly magnified.

But, joy really does take courage and like her dad Kelly had the courage to face many issues, some we all can relate to and some that those born in the shadow of genius have to deal with on their own terms.

My conversation with Kelly, that airs on most of our PBS stations this week, delves deeply into the life of George Carlin and his family. Kelly is open and honest about what it was like growing within a world that most of us cannot even imagine, yet on some level we all can relate to.

Unlike most of my peers preparing for their futures, I spent mine trying to undo my past.

If like me, you grew up loving George Carlin, listening to Kelly share the joy of being his daughter, even if at times that took courage, will be a delight for you as it was for me.

Have the courage to experience joy,

Barry
