Everyone needs to take control of his or her own life by making sense of it.
– Mariel Hemingway –
Mariel Hemingway is the granddaughter of one of America’s greatest writers Ernest Hemingway. As an acclaimed actress we first met her in Woody Allen’s iconic film Manhattan. With her memoir, Out Came the Sun, she shows how compassion, education, and understanding can take us all out of the darkness and into the light.
When you search for meaning, there’s always a tension between looking to the outside world and looking within yourself.
In our conversation, airing this week on most of our PBS stations, we get personal and delve deep into the issues of her family’s addictions, alcoholism and suicide and how she fought long and hard to find peace within herself. Her message will resonate with all.
Why was there such a drastic separation between who I imagined I was and the way that I showed up in the world?
This particular question that Mariel raises, and from so many conversations I have had with past guests, friends and family, dominates the spiraling thoughts in so many minds, mine included.
It seems that we all have a sense of who we are, yet we have this gnawing feeling within that somehow it is not the person we express outwardly. I have pondered this for a long time and the journey to discover the answer, although still a bit elusive, appears to come from a particular source. My wife believes it stems from the fact that it is hard for us to feel comfortable in our own skin.
What is so confusing about this is that of all places one would expect to find comfort it would be within ourselves. So why does this great dichotomy exist, even in many who outwardly appear confident and content?
When faced with a dilemma like this I resort to the words of Russ Sarnoff, another offspring of a great man, the grandson of David Sarnoff who built RCA and NBC. He always said: “If there is no solution there is no problem.”
Therefore, maybe that lack of comfort in our skin is really there to drive us to continue improving our lives. If so, there really is no problem.
Enjoy the show and may the sun come out in all your lives,
