There is no better story then a story you don’t know the ending of, of a man changing his life, and you identify with it immediately.
Matthew Weiner (Creator of Man Men) on Between the Lines
Mad Menis one of the most influential television series of all time, with 97 EMMY nominations and 4 wins for Outstanding Drama Series. A personal favorite of mine because of its complex characters and themes.
As the series winds down to its final season I decided to post one of our EMMY winning episodes, my conversation with Matthew Weiner, on our Between the Lines YouTube Channel.
One recurring theme, as Matthew states, is the changing of ones life over time and the mistakes made over and over again due to our own inner demons.
The lead character, Don Draper, played with unmatched complexity by the woefully not EMMY winning (yet) Jon Hamm, has become one of the most quotable characters in television history. Don Draper’s constant struggle of wanting to change but always seeming to fall into the same trappings of his own infallibilities is a pattern every character in the show and in real life faces.
We’re flawed because we want so much more. We’re ruined because we get these things and wish for what we had. – Don Draper
A little something to ponder that I do quite often. If I can ever find his publicist’s e-mail I will bring it up with Matthew when I invite him back on before the finale. Matthew, if you read this, get in contact brother.
