Power is the ability to influence the behavior of people. A person or organization that has a lot of control and influence over other people or organizations. The ability to act or produce an effect.
My guest this week epitomizes power. J.D. Power, the founder of J.D. Power and Associates, influenced the automobile industry by not only making cars better, safer, more fuel efficient and more reliable, but by setting the standard for customer service. The effect has trickled down to numerous industries. All finally realizing that the true power lies in the hands of the customer.
Let me share one of the great influencers that helped shaped J.D. Power’s philosophy. His name is Walter Wriston, and in his book The Twilight of Sovereignty, he writes that: “Humanity’s most important resource is its intellectual capabilities.”
You must realize that on some level we all possess this.
J.D. himself uses these terms: “Passion, integrity, balance and impact.” His son Jamey adds: “It’s about adjusting as fast as possible, because change is coming more rapidly than ever… It’s about persistence, perseverance, and about finding cracks.”
When it comes to “cracks,” I love to quote the great singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen who writes: “There’s a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.”
Maybe that is what true power is. The ability to find the crack and let that light shine in. Find your power and use it wisely.
