Capturing Beauty, Wonder and Awe

If we could capture the beauty, wonder and awe that is at the core of existence, and then bottle it up to keep it within us, the possibilities that would fill our spirit and soul would be boundless.
On a certain level, I am convinced we have that ability, but maybe our consciousness needs just a little more time to develop.
Until that time, we catch glimpses of this potential experience. Artists, poets, musicians, philosophers, theologians, physicists, mathematicians, teachers, wonderful friends, siblings and parents, plus some great New York City cab drivers, often times fill us with a glimmer of it.
But one institution, The National GeographicSociety,  has made it their mission for the past 125 years.
This Monday, January 27, celebrates the birth of this organization. Until today, I did not even realize that one of its founders was Alexander Graham Bell. So, please be sure to call and tell everyone.
This week on KLCS-TV in Los Angeles and many of my markets around the country (see episode listings at the top of the page) you will get a chance to catch those glimpses of BEAUTY, WONDER and AWE for yourself when Between the Lines celebrates this historic moment with Frans Lanting and Jodi Cobb,  two of some of the most celebrated photographers whose pictures have graced the magazine over the past 125 years.

But as if that in itself is not enough, it is not just the society or magazine we are discussing, but one of the most gorgeous volume of books I ever laid my eyes and hands on. It is a series of three massive coffee table picture books titled National Geographic: Around the World in 125 Years.

I mentioned this book around the Christmas holiday because it was and is something I believe no home should be without, but it is a limited edition of only 125,000 copies worldwide and published by TASCHEN, known as the greatest publisher of art, design and photography books.

I do hope they consider coming out with a non-limited edition, but that might be impossible when you realize the beauty, care, love and passion behind this extraordinary publication, produced by Benedikt Tashcenhimself.

Besides the sheer beauty of the pictures you will see during the episode, you will also hear tales of adventure that are “mind blowing” when you learn of the stories that Frans and Jodi experienced while capturing the images that captured the world’s attention.

For those of you who are readers of this blog, but do not get to see the program in your market, once my stations air the episode I will be posting it on-line so all can experience a spark of the BEAUTY, WONDER and AWE that surrounds us at all times.
