With this nice long Labor Day weekend coming up I could not help but ponder on labor and, its opposite, rest.
Two weeks ago I had dinner with Kamran Khavarani and two dear friends. Some of you are familiar with Kamran as a guest on Between the Lines and the creator of the art form Abstract Romanticism.
As soon as we sat down Kamran spoke about a recent lecture he gave that focused on opposites. The gist was that without an opposite you cannot really know what something is. You would not know evil if you did not know good, you would not know light if you did not know dark, no in, no out, no up, no down, you get the picture.
So to truly appreciate labor we must know and appreciate rest.
The concept of rest and its importance is sent home in Genesis. Immediately following the story of creation God rests. By the way, you do not have to be religious to believe in rest. Magician and entertainer Penn Jillette, an outspoken atheist, wrote an Atheist’s Ten Commandments and number 4 is: Put aside some time to rest and think.
Even in this 24/7 modern world, if you cannot even imagine the concept of rest, Rabbi Brian Mayer says: Do some not doing.
Truly celebrate all the hard work you and others do to make this world a better place by taking it easy and getting some rest. Fear not, for on Tuesday we all go back and labor.
