Father’s Day and The Doors

This weekend we celebrate Father’s Day and the special role that good fathers, grandfathers, and good men who sometimes have to fill in for fathers, play in the lives of children.
Sadly, the importance of fathers often goes unnoticed except in their absence.
The Proof is in our Prisons

According to the Justice Department more than 78% of the nation’s prison inmates grew up in a fatherless household and that’s just the male prison population. In prisons for women, 50% grew up in fatherless households.

John Densmore – The Doors Unhinged and Fathers

For viewers in most cities this week, you will have the chance to see my conversation with the legendary John Densmore, one of the co-founders of the iconic rock group The Doors. Our discussion focused on his book The Doors Unhinged, which was about an epic trial between some of the band members who always considered themselves a family.

One of the most classic moments in the book and our conversation was when John spoke about Jim Morrison’s father.

When Jim was alive the relationship between him and his dad was often strained. Jim and The Doors where symbolically tied to the opposition of the Vietnam War, while Jim’s father was an Admiral in the Navy during the war, and lead ships into battle in Vietnam.

A Father’s Love Runs Deep
In John’s book and our conversation, what John expressed that was so moving and beautiful to learn, was the role Admiral Steven Morrison played during the trial. Jim’s dad, who at the time of the trial was in his late 80’s, stood by his son’s legacy and attended the trial every day for nearly a year, lending support to John and the entire Morrison family.

Besides the Music

John Densmore is one of those rare people who when they walk into a room you can feel and sense something very special. There was an aura of soul and spirit that surrounded him and was felt by myself, my family and the entire crew. It is a presence that you cannot help but enjoy basking in while relishing the moment.

Here is a mere sampling of some of John’s words that I want to share with all the great fathers we are blessed with and all those who appreciate them.

I’ve cultivated a newfound appreciation for words. As a musician, I was lost in the nonlinear world of sound, but now, language has become much more fascinating and compelling to me. I think I love words now, something that took me by surprise.

What makes an elder? Michael Meade, author, mythologist, and one of the leaders of the Men’s Movement in the eighties, said, “Everybody gets older, not everybody gets elder.”

John Densmore is truly an elder. Like all great fathers their wisdom grows and continues to shed light on all of us who are so grateful for their presence in our lives.
Thank you dad, and all great dads, who show why the role of a father needs to be celebrated not only on this special day, but always. And no one can be a great dad without the love they get from their children and wives that help make them who they are.

One thought on “Father’s Day and The Doors

  1. Re: The Doors. As a kid really liked the singles, especially 'Light My Fire', but my appreciation of the band has waxed and waned as the Morrison cult has pressed for sainthood for their fallen idol.

Jim Ladd, who I otherwise respect, will play every gasp or wheeze the man recorded. No one is that talented. I write poetry, too, but I don't have Morrison's looks, and sadly, the sixties have passed.

I also don't understand the necessity of the 40th Anniversary remixes. I purchased the remixed best of (having an earlier version on vinyl), and the drums are pushed up in the mix, perhaps to highlight what a great backup band John Densmore had in the Doors – nothing personal, John, but Bruce Botnick should have know better.

There is nothing wrong with the original mixes, from what I can hear, and when you replace those with these remixed CD's, you essentially rewrite history. The original CD's are nowhere to be found at any brick and mortar location. Remastered yes, remixed, no, not for these recordings. RIP Ray Manzarek and thanks for your many contributions that we all enjoy.
