Our Constitution

The founding document of our country is our Declaration of Independence, but our sustaining document, the one that is designed to insure our independence and provide the glue for holding our nation together, is The Constitution.

Americans venerate the Constitution and many of us consider it a sacred document. Christopher Phillips, my guest this week on Between the Lines debuting in Los Angeles and many of my PBS markets (check station listings below) realizes that many of us do not actually know what is in it.
Chris has appeared on the program before and we had wonderful discussions about Socrates based on his book, Socrates Café. The book featured in this week’s episode is titled: Constitution Café and as he did for his past work on Socrates, he now does for the Constitution. Chris traveled the country holding “Constitutional Cafés” with groups as diverse as: children in a park, women in a prison and esteemed constitutional lawyers and college professors.

His goal was to engage and enlighten citizens to play a more active role in our country’s future, a very similar position held by Thomas Jeffersonwho wrote the Declaration, but had no involvement in the initial writing of the Constitution. Chris also wanted to see what changes citizens might make today if they had the opportunity to take part in the writing of the Constitution.

I found many of the results astounding. First thing that came to mind was how close to perfect the original document really is. Even though there were some “changes” the various groups wanted to see, they were not very far from the original intent.

The Elite vs. The Common Citizen
One of the most enlightening aspects was that if any changes were suggested, the ones that were most in tune with our original Founding Fathers were not those by the more elite groups like lawyers and professors that he met, but by ordinary citizens and even those living in not so ordinary situations, like the women in prison. Ben Franklyn always realized this. He stated that it was the wisdom of “The Middling” man who best described America and that, “An American National Identity will be based on the virtues and values of the middle class.”
An Educated Populace
Another important message that was sent home during our conversation was the importance that without an educated population the Constitution could easily be subverted. In fact, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, who were staunch political adversaries, both agreed that: “in the absence of competent citizens, bills of rights were but pieces of paper.”
Most Interesting Fact I Learned
We all grew up learning that the House of Representatives would regularly increase based on the population of each state. In fact, it was the original reason why every 10 years we survey the population. But that all changed in 1911 by a simple piece of legislation. They arbitrarily stopped doing it when the House reached 435 members. This might be the biggest issue that began to make citizens feel less connected to their government. The story is fascinating and so are some of the proposed solutions, but they are too detailed to write about here. You’ll see it in the episode or can always pick up Chris’s book.

United We Stand
Key lessons from Constitution Café are “Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle,” and as Jefferson said: “Question with boldness.”
As Chris writes in Constitution Café:
If the original American character is to be revived, much less to evolve, then we must slough off the dogmatism so pervasive today and replace it with an enthusiastic openness to new points of view.
Our Constitution has held strong for well over 200 years, but it is just a piece of paper if we as citizens do not keep our American Values as top priorities. For as Jefferson believed: An excellent society hinges not on iconic statesmen no matter how great and virtuous, but on the involvement of ordinary citizens, enlightened, peaceable and really free.”
